Élisabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti are among the most famous designers of the 1980s.

At a level comparable to the Italian designers of Memphis or Philippe Starck, they received important commissions for interior decoration projects, innovative furniture design and industrially produced products. Among the creations that had a major impact, we can cite the "Chaise Barbare", 1981 (for which the couple obtained the epithet "The new barbarians"), the "Rocher de Table", numerous creations for the crystal manufacturer Daum, the Faïencerie de Gien, the boutiques of Christian Lacroix, the street furniture and the decoration of a tram line in Montpellier (swallows on a blue background), or the design of the package for the perfume Nina Ricci, "5". Élisabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti distanced themselves from high technology, functionalism and minimalism. Their designs are surrealist, baroque and theatrical, and they use a diversity of materials: wood, stone, leather, metal ...

With its molded exterior pattern, Garouste and Bonetti took inspiration for the Ricard bottle from pictorial sunburst vials of the early 19th century (see illustrated example dating from the 1820s). Squat gourds or flattened brown vials, they most often held spirits and specific brands through their decorative external relief.

With its gregarious society and pétanque courts, the sun is a perfect symbol to represent the South of France. It suggests the conviviality of the bistro terrace, warmed by the sun. In this lazy sensual ambiance, cloudy anisette yellow triggers a nostalgia for emerald green absinthe. It pays homage to the “cursed artists” who drank a forbidden liqueur that flowed its way through a sugar cube placed on a pierced, silver spoon, marbleizing the crystal clear water in a heavy stemmed glass below.

Garouste and Bonetti have fashioned a modern solar symbol, with fifteen freehand rays emanating from an ovoid, white shape, a design that evokes the iconographic traditions of Baroque art, but which has the unmistakable imprint of the end of the 20th century.

Holding a Ricard balloon in your hands is a sensual experience and a privilege. Even if you choose not to use it as a water carafe, it is a chic and elegant vessel, a reliquary that can contain and have a number of liquids, making their transparency, transparency or opacity more precious: liqueurs, maple syrup, vinaigrette...
